The Giggs Must Go On. It’s incredible just how far back into archive footage you can go and find Manchester United and Wales legend, Ryan Giggs.
Ryan Giggs has been a professional soccer player since before the
Internet, since before cell phones were everywhere. He’s been playing
for so long, he began his United career before more than a quarter of
the world’s current population was born!
On the day of his 14th birthday, Ryan Giggs came home from school in Swinton, Manchester to find Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson waiting for him armed with schoolboy forms and asking for a signature. Some birthday present!
On 4 May, 1991, Giggs made his Manchester United first team debut against Manchester City. He was just 17 year-old, and scored his first ever goal in that 1–0 derby win. Way to start!
With his boyish pop looks, he captured the public imagination in a way unseen since the days of George Best. Giggs became a pin-up, a poster wonder boy, his face lived on millions of bedroom walls. George Best was indeed a Giggs fan and once wryly quipped: “One day they might even say that I was another Ryan Giggs.”
As the most decorated player in English football history, Giggs also holds the Manchester United club record for competitive appearances. During his time at United, he has won 12 Premier League winner’s medals, 4 FA Cup winner’s medals, 3 League Cup winner’s medals and 2 Champions League winner’s medals.
On 26 February 2012, Giggs made his 900th appearance for Manchester United, in a 2-1 away win against Norwich City. He marked the occasion by scoring the winning goal in the 90th minute.
After the match, Alex Ferguson told BBC Sport he believed that a player playing in 900 games for one club “won’t be done again”.
The Internet is filled with compilations of Giggs’ goals – his jinking runs through wrong-footed defenses at breakneck speed are legendary, his concentration is intense, his determination is fierce, his rockets shots into the roof of the net are wondrous to behold.
And at 38-years of age, there’s nothing sleepy or mythical about this Welsh dragon. He’s still very much breathing fire. He recently signed another one-year contract with Manchester United. And when he’s not delivering inch-perfect passes to strikers, he’ll still take the occasional charges at a startled defense.
It will be fascinating to see what much-needed wizardry the Welsh wonder can conjure for Team GB during these Olympic Games.
