Per allAfrica.com. Mainland champions Young Africans technical bench is optimistic they
will perform well at the forthcoming East and Central Africa Inter-Clubs
Championship, Kagame Cup, set for July 18-August 2 in Dar es Salaam.
Head coach Hans van der Pluijm said after their 1-0 victory against Zanzibar's KMKM in a build-up match at the National Stadium on Wednesday evening his lads displayed good football and deserved to win.
The Dutchman said they used the match to assess their strength and weakness ahead of the prestigious regional championship and was impressed by the standard displayed by his charges.
"Our focus was on the team's performance rather than winning the game. We wanted to see if the players have grasped what they are taught in training and are familiar with our formation," he said.
"I'm glad they displayed good teamwork and this gives us hope that they will perform well at the Kagame Cup," he added. Yanga and KMKM are pooled in Group A alongside Kenya's Gor Mahia, Telecom of Djibouti and Sudan's Khartoum National.
Yanga launch their campaign with a match against Gor Mahia on July 18, while KMKM take on Telecom in their opening match the same day. The two Tanzanian sides lock horns on July 24.
In Wednesday's game, Yanga got the lone goal through their newly signed striker Donald Ngoma, who was formerly with Zimbabwe's FC Platinum.
Ngoma headed home a good cross from Brazilian midfielder Andrey Coutinho in the 54th minute. On his side, KMKM head coach Ali Bushiri expressed satisfaction over his team's performance despite losing the game.
He said his side managed to contain their opponents' pressure, especially in the first half, but a slight mistake led to their defeat.
He was, however, hopeful that his lads will be in better condition before the Kagame Cup kicks off and they are looking forward to a better performance.
Meanwhile, Yanga's match against Tanzania Police combined which was to take place tomorrow at the National Stadium has been pushed forward to Sunday.
Yanga Secretary General, Dr Jonas Tiboroha, said the match has been postponed to give room to a U-20 Women's World Cup qualifier between Tanzania's Tanzanite and Zambia's Young She-polopolo at the Azam Complex, Chamazi in the city.
"We'll take on Police on Sunday and our Rwandese midfield maestro Haruna Niyozima is due tomorrow (today)," he said.
